What have I learned?

I have learned a lot through this course. I have learned that there are so many social media sites out there that we don’t use to our advantage. I’ve been so stuck on Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr so long that I’ve failed to realize that WordPress, LinkedIn, and YouTube are also great ways to connect to people.

When it comes to Facebook, I’ve always thought of it as more for people connecting, and not businesses. But our guest speaker Nathan showed us how to use Facebook for business since you want to “be where your customers are.” I now run the Facebook page for my job, Chow Time. It’s starting off slow, but every website I’ve looked at, and even Nathan, said it would happen that way.

I’ve learned that communication between businesses and customers is so important, and it’s moving more and more towards social media. While studying the Georgia Aquarium on Facebook, I noticed that people asked every day for ticket prices and specials. These things are clearly listed on the Aquarium’s website, but people want a faster response. They want things to be easier for them, so instead of searching for answers, they simply ask. Response time is a big deal, as well as attitude.

If I added anything to this course, I’d say to teach us how to use the social media sites that we haven’t used before. It’s easy to jump right onto a website that’s required for class and not know what you’re doing. I did it with LinkedIn, Pinterest, etc. But once I got the hang of it, they were helpful. In my opinion, it just took too long for me to get the hang of it, and if I’d have learned sooner, I think they would have been more beneficial.

I interviewed with a potential job over this semester and they were extremely impressed with my knowledge and background with social media. Thank you, Mrs. Groover!

Kevin Clash as Elmo

I haven’t heard anything about the controversy involving Kevin Clash until now. Honestly, I’m not the kind of person to care about things like this. I’m a firm believer in keeping your work and personal lives separate. Kevin Clash’s personal affairs do not involve Elmo! My sister and I have been Elmo’s biggest fans since we were little, and Clash was only accused, nothing was proven.

I don’t know how Sesame Street would find someone to take Clash’s place, but when it comes to television shows that I grew up on, a lot of the actors have already been replaced, so I don’t think his exit will affect Elmo or Elmo’s fan base any. Sure, parents control what their kids watch, but usually kids won’t even know anything happened, and if something did happen between Clash and his accuser, kids who watch Sesame Street aren’t going to associate Clash’s actions with Elmo.

I feel like Sesame Street did an okay job with handling the incident. They issued a great statement letting everyone know why Clash would not longer play as Elmo. If I was a OR Rep. at Sesame Street, I’d say they should have stood behind Clash a little more. They did mention he’d been with them for 28 years. The accuser said things happened when he was 16, he is now 23 years old and that was a long time ago.

“We met with the accuser twice and had repeated communications with him. We met with Kevin, who denied the accusation. We also conducted a thorough investigation and found the allegation of underage conduct to be unsubstantiated. Although this was a personal relationship unrelated to the workplace, our investigation did reveal that Kevin exercised poor judgment and violated company policy regarding Internet usage and he was disciplined.”

This quote, I don’t know about. I don’t think they should have mentioned any other trouble he’d gotten into, and they definitely shouldn’t have put him on leave unless that was his own idea.

Like I said, I don’t think Clash’s actions or exit will affect Elmo, Elmo’s viewers, or anything related to Sesame Street with the audience that really matters, the kids. Other characters have been replaced without so much controversy, and I think it would be a good way to handle the situation. Let it go and find someone else to play Elmo so that Clash’s actions are never associated with the Elmo on television.

Top 10 Movies

I don’t really watch movies, so this list definitely won’t contain ten. I can give you my four favorite though, because I do have that many.

4. Wicker Park. The twists and turns in this movie make you think. The connections make you realize how small of a world we really live in. And the love story behind it all is fabulous. Plus seeing Matthew Lilard outside of Scooby-Doo is a postive change.

3. The Help. My boyfriend bought this movie for me for Christmas/my birthday last year. Emma Stone is one of my favorite actresses, so that definitely helped in deciding on The Help as one of my favorite movies. The roles that the women played as the help in the movie were awesome. All of the actors and actresses were perfect choices. They couldn’t have done a better job. The movie really touched me because I hate seeing people treated the way these women were treated. And I really, really meshed with Ceila Foot. I LOVED her. My favorite person in the movie. Her attitude, the things that happened to her, I could definitely relate. I feel like when there’s a person in a movie that you relate to, you tend to like that movie more.

2. Wreck-It Ralph. Animated movies are amazing. I don’t know if anyone else knows how much time and work it takes to animate things, but I do. My boyfriend is a media arts and animation major, so I get to sit around and watch him spend hours on the computer, animating little animations that barely last 10 seconds. So to say the least, it’s hard work. I like this movie because at the end, it’s revealed that the “bad guy” is actually the Disney “princess” and the “princess” chooses that she’d rather be president. Showing little girls that they don’t have to be fancy princesses all the time, they can be whatever they want. And I think that’s a message from Disney that I’ve been waiting for a long time.

1. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. I know this movie is old, and so is the book, but the book is also my favorite. I just love the storyline. Everything that it’s about. I watched it for the first time in my 10th grade Psychology and Sociology classes and it’s been my all-time favorite movie ever since.

Also, I like all the Batman/Dark Knight movies simply because I’m a Batman fanatic.

Some movies I’m looking forward to are: THE SECOND DESPICABLE ME MOVIE! The Rise of the Guardians, and the new Oz movie.

As Thanksgiving approaches, what am I thankful for?

With Thanksgiving approaching in a couple of weeks, take a moment (or two) to give thanks for the people, places, things, etc. you are grateful for (minimum of 10). Why did these make your list?

(10) I’m thankful for my right to vote. Every four years, the month of November is absolutely nuts. I recently voted in my first election. I know a lot of people chose not to exercise their right to vote, for whatever reason, and some people who did vote should have chosen not to because they voted for all the wrong reasons, but regardless. I can say that I am glad that I had the chance to educate myself on all three candidates, and I feel like I voted for the best choice for me and for my future!

(9) I’m thankful for my job. I have had some horrible jobs and some not-so-horrible jobs. The job I have now, I really like. I am a hostess at Chow Time and I run our Facebook page. I really feel like being in control of social media is a job I could be doing in the future, and they’re kind enough to start helping me get experience. I work with people who only speak Chinese, and people who only speak Spanish, and hearing their languages is awesome. I’ve learned a little necessary Chinese: hello, my name is Jamee, thank you, no, yes, etc. and I’ve been pretty fluent in Spanish. I love learning new languages, so. It’s a great job!

(8) I’m thankful for job opportunities in my career field. I cannot express how thankful I am to be a part of a generation who is learning new things for the first time and utilizing them in ways never thought possible. At my recent interviews, companies have been looking for interns and employees who not only write well, but write well online and are familiar with social networking and with the social media sites that no one else seems to be familiar with.

(7) I’m thankful for my education. No matter how much I hate coming to class, I come to learn. No matter how hard it is for me to get up in the mornings, I get up. I go to a great school, I am part of a great major, and my education will definitely present opportunities for me in the future. If I won the lottery tomorrow, I would continue my last 6 months of college and still obtain my degree! I love knowing things.

(6) I’m thankful for jackets and long-sleeved shirts and having the money to buy these things! I get really cold, really fast.

(5) I’m thankful for the teachers I’ve had in the past. I would never be where I am today without them. Outside of my parents, my teachers have been the biggest influence in my life.

(4) I’m thankful for being open-minded. There are some people in this world who never think about anyone but themselves and I do not see how someone lives like that.

(3) I’m thankful for Carrie (my car). My boyfriend lives 4 hours away in Decatur and he has for the past two years. I have 6 more months of school and he won’t graduate until 2015–he joined the Air Force right out of high school and recently began school at the Art Institute–so we rarely get to see each other. I see him once a month, and I’m thankful that my car makes it there and back for us to be able to see each other. I don’t know what I’d do without my car. I’ve taken better care of this car than I’ve taken of myself. I live 30 minutes outside of town, so without a car, I wouldn’t be able to make it to class. I wouldn’t have a job, and I wouldn’t be able to get food or go grocery shopping!

(2) I’m thankful for my boyfriend. I’ve never met someone so good at everything they do. We play video games together and he’s awesome. He’s an amazing artist and has been entered in film festivals and art shows and he just started his second year of art school. He joined the Air Force right out of high school and traveled all over the United States and was stationed in two other countries. He’s my best friend and he’s such a good person to everyone he meets.

(1) I’m thankful for my family: my mom, dad, and little sister. My cat Miles Avary Allen and my dog Simba. I don’t think I have to explain why I’m thankful for them; they’re my family and they’re all I need.
